The Role Women Have Played in Hip Hop: Impact of Roxanne Shante

Hart House’s “Women in Hip Hop: Erasure, Trailblazers and Place-makers”” honours Joan Morgan’s concept of “Hip Hop feminism.” This event took place on March 8, 2022 and showcases three incredible voices: Dr. Francesca D’Amico-Cuthbert, Martha Diaz and Lynnée Denise. These trailblazers and beacons of knowledge refuse to be tempered, marginalized or erased. Their shared experiences and knowledge of Hip Hop will have you questioning what you thought you knew about the genre and uncovers the historical and continuing contributions of women in Hip Hop.

Presented by Hart House and Fresh, Bold, and So Def at the Universal Hip Hop Museum: https://uhhm.org/education-center/fre…

Digital Caribbean Feminisms

Black Women Radicals presents “Caribbean Feminisms”, a four-part online event series paying homage to historical and contemporary Caribbean feminisms and feminists. The series curated and hosted by educators, organizers, and scholars, Nana Brantuo and Dr. Andrea N. Baldwin. The first event in the series was on “Digital Caribbean Feminisms”, which aired on Thursday, September 24th, 2020 at 4:30 PM EDT. Panelists for this event included: Kenita Placide, Zainab Floyd, Dr. Angelique V. Nixon, and Dr. Tonya Haynes.

About the Event: For Caribbean feminists, the incorporation and usage of the internet for space and placemaking has been “multigenerational, multiethnic, transnational, and Pan-Caribbean” (Haynes, 2016). For Caribbean feminst activists, archivists, artists, and scholars, digital space has played a key role in archiving & curation, knowledge production and sharing, and organizing and mobilizing and has facilitated increased amplification of the voices, experiences, and perspectives of Caribbean women, girls, femmes, gender non-conforming and non-binary folx within and across the region. Joined by feminists across the region and Diaspora, this event will deepen and expand our understanding of digital Caribbean feminisms and will touch on its evolution and impact, the critical role of digiality in grassroots Caribbean feminist activism and knowledge production, the digital divide in the Caribbean, and the future of Caribbean feminisms in digital spaces particularly in the time of COVID 19.
