Reign(a): DonMonique

In this episode of Reign(a), rapper DonMonique teaches us how to roll a backwood.

Hailing from Brooklyn and the Bronx, Don began making a name for herself in New York City’s rap game with her “Kendall, Kylie, and Miley” single “Pilates.” Her debut EP, Thirst Trap, which dropped last year and features Danny Brown, is undeniably Brooklyn, paying homage to the Brooklynites who came before her and is reminiscent of an early version of a slightly-less vulgar Lil’ Kim. New York to the bone, she constantly reminds all those watching “not to talk shit” about her blunt rolling. Sit back and learn from the Don.

_*reign(a) *is an interview series featuring strong females who challenge cookie-cutter definitions of “feminism.” Through various social media outlets, an unprecedented number of artists are leveraging their online personas to dismantle archaic ideals of womanhood. We will talk to and learn from fly women who inspire others not because it’s cool, but because conformity is boring.

LYRICS:
It don’t seem real that I’ve been away for ten years.
The scene feel familiar from Benning road to Ben Hill.
Landscape full of crabs, snakes in the grass, you don’t watch em, they might off u with a blade from the killing fields.
Homie, I’m a sharecroppers daughter and I still owe, niggas here was worth their weight in gold, Patna-Steel Pulse.
Now we on the sidelines tryna to find an ally and an affinity for Allah will turn u into a scapegoat.
And every since Jansports and Sambas I been on the run. Place got me sleep with one eye open wide, insomnia.
Thought I paid my dues watching my muses burning rocks, but obviously I am still mired to a debt that I can’t wander from.
That’s Choc city. Buck fifty for the glocks-any stock.
Where Hustlas sell Dasani to Atlantic Ocean-penny stock.
Luster starts to fade when the fresh coats every winter stop.
I learned all that I needed tween these educated city blocks.

Chorus:
What you don’t know is we are-more than the city.
We’ve been so close yet so far-ain’t that a pity
Trading freedom for just enough-land of the plenty
No one’s gon change it but us.

Bars like vocal analyses, Probing deep in your maladies, how the freak can you challenge me.
I’m the people’s champ, Ali.
See this is liquid I’m leaking into your psyche enticing those seeds to flowers, by sonnet peep the analogy.
Maybe it was providence polishing this crystal from gravel.
Cuz high society shun u after existence in Babel.
No one seems to understand us, words are too twisted in fragments.
Crumbling and decomposing on the lips of the tragic.
Despite it all the writers with a voice one dimensional.
Their One liners fraught with cliches non-original.
Imma slice and spiralize these charades,son-elliptical.
Naked truth in the midst of masquerades is so critical.
Daddy’s in the bottom of the bottle cuz he think I’m lost.
Keep verses bright with modicums of shade to get my point across.
This is just but one of many pages in the catacombs.
The makings of a Pharoah from favelas that’s ironic, huh?

Chorus:
What you don’t know is we are-more than the city.
We’ve been so close yet so far-ain’t that a pity
Trading freedom for just enough-land of the plenty
No one’s gon change it but us

Lyrics:
First Verse
Came out the gully with Fulanis and a scully on. I used to run tough with the gods and some hellions. Never crossed the family on the word of a civilian. That’s why they call me Dedan(the Don) like Mau Mau rebellions. Voice honey coated, lil bit of gravel in it. For them classic rhymes with a lil bit of savage in em. I ain’t new to this profession, I’m established in it. Any challenge to the status quo would be a cataclysm. Cuz I’m Assata with the good hair-9 ether. I have em pissing lemonade when I arrive eager. My mediocre is Lee Iacocca, I CEO shit. ‘Fore I come up out the A class like a ivy leaguer. Pineal on a 100 like I’m Benjamin. I am 1/2 Outcast, 5/10s granite. Fully liable to crush an mc mid sentence. Crystals crusted on my wrist with the tint salmon. Queen ting.

Second verse:
Every time I come through, 10 maroons-PULL UP!!
Watch the dj, when mi chune done he soon-PULL UP!!
Cuz I’m a rockwilder, child of mean streets and crack houses. Now I break bread in Lagos with some sharp Hausas. This for Alton, Sandra Bland, my man Malcolm. Tried to bury us, but they forgot we stay sprouting. Pedigree is incredibly star studded. That’s why u probably find me bathing in tubs that’s claw footed. Forget the profit, here to be the next prophet. Writing scriptures in a villa that’s Moroccan carpeted. I floss imported ensembles of brocade. From villages hard to pronounce, harder to locate. Only associate with Rebels and comrades, cuz society frightened by my melanin contrast. Still rappers sell their soul for a helluva contract. Roc don’t ever compromise but she will settle for combat. Queen ting.
