In a Black household in the 1970s, the television had three channels, a pair of rabbit ears, and a pecking order that changed by the hour. Saturday morning was the one stretch of the week when the children got to set the schedule.
What follows is thirty funny, ordinary things that filled a Black kid’s life in the seventies, and not one of them is coming back.
In this video:
✓ Saturday morning cartoons and the fight over the dial
✓ Schoolhouse Rock, Time for Timer, and the In the News break
✓ Hong Kong Phooey, Josie, Sigmund, and the Krofft heroes
✓ Quarter water, pickles, and the corner store
✓ The tamale man, popcorn cart, and junk man’s horse
✓ The hydrant pool, Kool-Aid stand, and boiled peanuts
✓ Big Wheel, Merlin, and the Atari joystick
✓ Boomboxes, leisure suits, and the Julia doll
These were not big things. That is what makes them hard to explain. A quarter water, a pickle in a bag, a joystick with one button, a cartoon dog with a filing cabinet.
That is how a Saturday morning gets to last a little longer.
