“My grandmother was Cherokee.” “We’ve got Indian in our family.” But what does your family’s history actually show? In this broadcast, Uncle D (Dennis Spurling) confronts a history too often left out of those proud declarations: Native Americans also enslaved Black people. Having ancestors who lived among a Native nation doesn’t, by itself, prove Native ancestry. Were your ancestors members of that nation—or held in bondage by its slaveholders?
We’re discussing Black enslavement within the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole nations, the enslaved Black people forced along the Trail of Tears, and why family stories need to be checked against records. Real Native ancestry exists. So does a history of Black families whose connection to a Native nation included slavery.
Before you boast about “Indian blood,” learn the whole story. Your ancestors’ suffering deserves more than a family legend that leaves their bondage out. Black history doesn’t become less important when the slaveholder wasn’t white.
