Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao’s federal corruption trial just hit its biggest moment yet. The government’s star witness, Mario Juarez, took the stand, admitted he pleaded guilty to bribing a public official, and named that official in open court: Sheng Thao.
Juarez told the jury how he says the deal worked. The Duong family, owners of California Waste Solutions, would pay $75,000 for attack mailers against Thao’s opponent. In return, she’d get the city to buy 100 container homes from their company, Evolutionary Homes. Then, Juarez says, Thao threw a curveball: she wanted $300,000 funneled through her boyfriend, Andre Jones. After a meeting at Skates on the Bay, he says, that ask jumped to $3 million.
And it’s not just his word. Secret recordings from inside the company’s board meetings were played at the federal trial. On them, the people paying for all of this are mad that the mayor didn’t deliver:
“A deal is a deal.”
“You’re not going to get any more money from us until you deliver the deal.”
