Black Funerals Are Getting Out of Control: Where Is the Decorum?

Today we’re talking about the behavior we’re seeing at some Black funerals—arguing, twerking, pouring alcohol on caskets, hanging out of car windows, and turning a funeral into a spectacle.

The issue is the same as always: behavior and standards. If we want to be respected, we also have to respect ourselves, the people around us, and the spaces we occupy. Even at a private funeral, how we conduct ourselves reflects the standards we hold ourselves to. We cannot demand respect from the world while refusing to practice dignity, self-control, and decorum ourselves.
