A Miami rapper named Cavani Hicks, known locally as a recording artist affiliated with Pretty Thug Music, was charged with second-degree murder after a shooting near Wynwood Walls in Miami around 1:30 a.m. on a Monday morning. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert on Northwest Second Avenue, where surveillance footage showed Hicks arguing with the driver of a white Lexus and her manager.
Both men physically attacked her, slamming her to the ground. Hicks then walked away from the altercation before turning back, drawing a firearm, and shooting her manager as he fled. He later died at the hospital. The driver struck Hicks with the Lexus before fleeing. Hicks claimed self-defense, arguing she feared another attack, but prosecutors contended she pursued the victim while he was helpless. Her attorneys filed for immunity under Florida’s stand-your-ground statute. The trial was ongoing at the time of this analysis.
