Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is facing backlash after appearing at Chris Brown and Usher’s concert in Arlington, Texas, where she announced congressional recognition of the R&B stars and celebrated what she called “Black joy.”
But I have a bigger question: **What are our standards for political leadership?**
Because while Crockett is using the prestige of her congressional office to celebrate entertainers, residents of historic Sand Branch in Texas’s 30th Congressional District have spent decades fighting for something far more basic: reliable running water and wastewater infrastructure.
And that’s where this conversation gets uncomfortable. This isn’t about whether members of Congress are allowed to attend concerts. Of course they are. It’s about priorities.
It’s about symbolism versus substance. It’s about politicians trying desperately to demonstrate that they’re culturally “down” with the people while the people they’re elected to represent are still waiting for measurable results.
Then Crockett quotes Scripture, talks about “Black joy,” participates in a Young Miami singalong about “scamming,” and presents recognition to Chris Brown despite his well-documented history of legal trouble—including his 2009 felony assault conviction involving Rihanna.
At some point we have to ask:
**What exactly are we celebrating?**
