A viral image involving a young boy wearing a skirt to school has ignited a debate about parenting, self-expression, schools, and the responsibility adults have to guide children.
According to reports surrounding the image, the boy’s mother defended her decision by saying she allows her son to express himself, while accusing the school of discrimination after the principal asked that the child be removed from school.
But there is a much bigger question:
Are parents supposed to allow children to make every decision about who they are and what they do—or are parents supposed to provide boundaries, direction, and guidance?
Children are not miniature adults. They lack the life experience and judgment that come with maturity. That’s why parents are supposed to teach, correct, discipline and prepare their children for adulthood.
And when we’re talking about young Black boys, the stakes are enormous.
This isn’t simply about a skirt. It’s about what we believe parenting is supposed to accomplish. Is the job of a parent to affirm every choice a child makes—or to help that child develop into a responsible, confident and productive adult?
And here’s the uncomfortable question:
If parents consistently fail to provide that guidance, does society have a responsibility to intervene?
